Blizzard's Fourth Project: StarCraft MMO?

Other | July 2, 2008 (1 month, 3 weeks ago) | by Kody | Filed in Blizzard Entertainment

For those who didn't figure it out by the Next-Gen Job Openings over on Blizzard's website, we finally have confirmation from an interview that Blizzard has a fourth dev team now, and it's the one working on the Next-Gen MMO.

"We have another development team that is still very early on," Pardo said during the interview. "There's still one 'unknown' project." What's even more interesting is that earlier this year during GDC, Pardo hinted that their next MMO will not be fantasy-based.

Rob Pardo had a tinge of palpable disdain for the question. He reminded everyone that in the 1970s, people thought sci-fi couldn't be successful on TV or in the movies. “Then a little film called Star Wars came along and it revolutionized everything.” According to Pardo, a big, successful sci-fi MMO simply hasn't been seen yet. You just have to have the right product, and it could easily be just as succesful as WoW.

With the announcement of Diablo III this weekend, it likely means we won't be seeing a Diablo MMO in the near future. That's not to say they'll never create a Diablo MMO, but it's highly unlikely to be this Next-Gen project Blizzard is working on. So what does that leave us with? Considering Pardo's comments mentioned above, along with Paul Sams commenting in this interview, it probably isn't World of Warcraft II either -- nor anything fantasy-related.

So the next question is, if it's not fantasy-related then it's likely going to be sci-fi... so is it StarCraft related, then? Obviously Blizzard is intrigued by the success of EVE Online since they're exploring the possibility, but one has to question how set in stone this is. They're definitely in the concept phases for the game now -- since they're still hiring many of the programmers, designers, and artists required to actually get a game like this off the ground -- but using the StarCraft universe as a basis for the title would help to speed up the process.

Granted, Blizzard isn't afraid of introducing new franchises, according to Paul Sams. "What I will say, though, is that the idea of a new franchise is very intriguing to employees of the company. Are we ever going to release a new one? I would absolutely say we will at some point. I just don’t know when that day will be quite yet." But would this Next-Gen MMO be their new IP? They'll no doubt explore it at some point, but it's hard to swallow the thought of it being a new IP with the potential a StarCraft MMO has.

Then again, it could be a Blackthorne MMO; Blizzard released that game way-back-when, in 1994 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and then did nothing else with the IP -- other than releasing it on other platforms over the next 9 years. They also developed other non-fantasy titles like The Death and Return of Superman, Justice League Task Force, RPM Racing and Rock N' Roll Racing, so even though World of Warcraft and its fantasy setting has become their favorite child, they're no stranger to games with non-fantasy story settings.

But, Blizzard is definitely building the story of the StarCraft franchise up something fierce with StarCraft II -- similar to the way they built up the Warcraft story with Warcraft III and Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne -- so what are your thoughts? We have a while to speculate on this, since it more than likely will not be announced at BlizzCon, but do you think their next MMO is StarCraft-related? How does "StarCraft Universe" sound to you?

I could see this being a massive marketing ploy by Blizzard.

Every time there's a new game that's going to come out they seem to give out just enough little hints to find a very likely solution, which always ends up being the game (Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, WoW: WotLK, even the draenei from WoW: TBC is an example). People, like you, Kody, do articles like this one and the followers of Blizzard Entertainment effectively create a mass amount of hype, with literally no advertising from Blizzard itself.

Riding on this hype, and this hype alone, Blizzard is able to announce a game with a punitive amount of information about the game, and still have it become major news in the gaming community.

We already know the folks at Blizzard are marketing geniuses, so they certainly have the potential to pull such brilliant marketing. So, what are your thoughts? We have a while to speculate on this, since it is more than likely that it will never be public information, but do you think Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. has the marketing power and strategy to trick a customer base in to advertising its game for it in the most pure and effective strategy, or are we just smart? How does "Your Name, Advertising Manager" sound to you?

PS -- Systems of Stacraft imo.

I have hoped Blizzard would create a Starcraft MMO I even talked to my friends about trying to get a programming job at blizzard if i ever heard of them ever working on such an game and ill tell you what if they did it even though they'd prob only have three races to choose from imagine the classes you could create through that not to mention the pvp potential of it. I just think Starcraft as a MMO is a better choice for them due to the gravity it has and how much you can pull from it versus creating a new Franchise from scrath i hope they do that too. I just don't think it will happen in the near future there's too much potential and gravity in all there franchises to stop working with em.

A sci-fi MMORPG is not as far-fetched a concept as one may think. The gameplay style would be little different from WoW, except with most attacks being ranged attacks. This is still done with WoW (i.e. hunters and spellslingers). The setting would be just as detailed as WoW, judging from the level of detail in the settings in Starcraft and the upcoming Starcraft 2. Using the same engine, playability would be just as awesome as WoW, perhaps a bit better as they have WoW to piggy-back on. An overall storyline is quite simple to develop as well. It is already somewhat in place with Starcraft, and new storylines coming with Starcraft 2 would hook into many more with an MMORPG. The Zerg, Terrans, ans Protoss could very well be the foundation of 3 factions, instead of the 2 main factions in Wow (Hord and Alliance). Classes could be MOS's (for Terrans), etc. The largest challenge these developers would have is races (if they decided to go that route, which I think they should. At least not stray far from it). As far as a market for a Sci-Fi MMORPG, I think it's already there. It is my experience that most computer gamers that are into medieval settings are also into sci-fi settings. The whole duality of fantasy/futuristic geeks. (I'm one of them).
I, for one, am excited at the idea of a Starcraft MMORPG, and would live on MRE's for a month to afford the game (and undoubtably a time card). I also agree with Kody, STARCRAFT: UNIVERSE sounds very catchy.

EVE certainly has helped the scifi genre lead inot MMO's but I think Star Wars Galaxies did as well and had the potential to be as great as WoW (IF sony had not been stupid and deployed the dreaded NGE).

Starcraft as a MMO would be awsome as long as you can play zerg.

Both anarchy online and Eve online are good at their pools but Eve online is way too much detailed and anarchy online is basicly not very high quality game.I would like to see starcraft mmo but also Blizz should think about creating new worlds for the game comunity

I know we're saying that Starcraft 2 might be leading the story and leading onto an SC MMO just as Warcraft did with WoW, but........ what if Diablo III is setting us up for a Diablo MMO? Seems unlikely and more likely that it will be an SC mmo to get more of the Koreans, Japanese, Chinese people into the MMO's, but idk, sure as hell can expect it to be something awesome though.

EVE online wasn't too good I thought - But then again I found it difficult to get into so I could be wrong

I'd love to play as a ghost :D Loading people with canister shells :D

I like EVE. It does have a rather steep learning curve though.

I would love a Starcraft MMO, but I can't imagine how it'd play out as Starcraft was more of a... campain game.

If they make a star craft mmo, I really hope they take the graphic reqs up a notch. Not much mind you, a big reason WoW is so huge is any one can play it. So by up a notch I mean just a little. =P

I really want the graphics to be a little more gritty than WoW has. For example, if Bliz used similar graphics like Warhammer is using, that would be awesome.

But yes, a sci-fi mmo from bliz? Where do I sign up! =)

Eve has obviously proven sci fi can be done. One of the big reasons I think it's been successful is because it's not really competing with wow like all the other games wow has stifled.

If you think about the way something works in wow and take the opposite, you've probably guessed how it works in eve. Blizzard designs titles to be super accessible, eve is designed to be cold and uncaring (paraphrased) with a nasty learning curve. Wow is designed to be low risk, low reward; eve is high risk, high reward. In wow if you die it costs you little to nothing, die in eve and it costs you a little to a whole-heck-of-a-lot. Wow is theme park, eve is sandbox. Wow's strength is pve, eve's strength is pvp. Wow skills come with play time, eve skills come with real time. Newbies can't really help or hurt vets in wow, but they sure can in eve. Your character stops progressing at 70 in wow, it never stops in eve. Wow is about collecting gear, eve is not. Newbie ships and equipment remain useful in eve, they're junk in wow.

etc etc

It's probably pretty safe to say blizzard will make wow's successor, but I wouldn't expect it to dent eve's subscriptions in the slightest, sci fi or not. It's a different market.

All I can say is this is one of the BEST comparisons between WoW and EVE. Totally correct. I played EVE for a while. Was running multi accounts even. ( Like most others playing it. ) But started having graphics issues so I left. Was nice at times only having huge server with everyone on it but spread out. Didn't have many lag issues except in major trading hubs like Jita. (Jita is the Devil)
I think it will be interesting to see how Blizz does with a sci-fi MMO. It is nice to see there expanding there MMO list. They have made a Very Good Fantasy, and now to try something different.

It's not like they can't work on multiple games at once. They hired a whole bunch of new people just to start work on this project.

we all knew it was coming...eventually they're gonna transfer all the WOW guys over there when they're out of bosses and expack ideas....it's gonna be weird but we'll have to see, blizzard has the talent to make it good ;D
